Extend the 256 character string limit.#473

It appears that a string column is limited to 256 characters. I need to overcome this limitation to store a larger number of characters. If there is a way to overcome this limit, please suggest. Otherwise, create the option to set the character limit in the column data settings., e.g. VARCHAR(1028) or CHAR(1028).
